The TATA Tea Group of Companies has announced a strategic reorganisation of its beverage businesses in order to focus on becoming the global leader in the fast growing $160 billion good for you beverage market.

The TATA Tea Group of Companies has announced a strategic reorganisation of its beverage businesses in order to focus on becoming the global leader in the fast growing $160 billion good for you beverage market.

The $1billion Group has integrated its tea, coffee and water brands and businesses around the world under a single management structure and this week announced a 5% increase in income year-on-year as a result of its b branded business.

The TATA Tea Group aims to bring consumers new and exciting brands that will fit in with modern lifestyle choices. Through b innovation the Group’s ambition is to provide products that consumers can enjoy and trust to be good for them and the planet.

Initially The TATA Tea Group will comprise of the Groups global brands including Tetley Tea, Tata Tea and the Good Earth speciality teas and coffees which will be supported by regional and speciality brands such as Eight O’Clock Coffee in the USA, Himalayan mineral water, Poland’s leading herbal tea Vitax, Indian brands such as Chakra Gold and Kanan Devan .

The company’s new strategy is to diversify away from its core market, tea, and build positions in high growth sectors of the good for you beverage categories through b product innovation and growth.

Mr R Krishna Kumar, currently vice chairman of Tata Tea and director, Tata Sons, will be responsible for stewarding the Tata Tea Group in the Tata Group of companies.

Peter Unsworth, formerly CEO of The Tetley Group, is the CEO of TATA Tea Group and head the executive team based in London, UK. Other members include: deputy CEO Percy Singaporia, CFO L Krishna Kumar, Chief Marketing Officer John Nicholas, Chief HR and Communications Officer Nalin Miglani. Hamid Ashraff, currently CEO of Tata Coffee will mentor the new team as it sets out on this ambitious agenda. This executive team will oversee the global beverage business which has been organised into six key regions. Each region, a customer serving, consumer facing and brand focused organisation, will be led by a Region President.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr R.Krishna Kumar said: “Today’s announcement marks the next stage in a process that began last year when we integrated our beverage businesses under the Tata Tea umbrella. Now, as one company, we will have a significant influence on the perception of the Tata brand worldwide. I am confident that transforming our business in this way will position us to become a b player, delivering new flavours to a new world of contemporary beverages.”

Peter Unsworth said: “We want to appeal to consumers who want hydration with flavour, who want to be good to themselves without a cost to the planet and who will smile at their choice of a TATA Tea Group brand. We want our business partners to share our aspirations, to help us create and deliver new flavours and concepts to consumers. We want our investors to continue with is on the journey from a regional commodity focussed business to a focussed, global branded beverage business.

Despite the global downturn, the longer term growth prospects for our core markets are extremely positive – tea, as in the past, proves to be resilient to recession – and our strategic choices for the future will be in-line with ever evolving consumer needs.”
